ABSTRACT

Introduction: Professional medical education needs hardwork, good physical and mental health. In previous studiesthere is no scientific consensus that a relationship existsbetween the ABO blood group and personality traits. In thiscurrent study we tried to find out association between differentblood groups and different type of stressors like physical, environmental, interpersonal and academic in young medicalstudents.Material and methods: This Descriptive Cross sectionalstudy was conducted at Rashid Latif Medical College Lahorefrom April to May 2019. A modified pre structured, valid andreliable questionnaire SSI was used to access the physical, academic, environmental, interpersonal stress, blood groupand gender of 1st year and 2nd year MBBs students. Initially220 (91 male and 129 female) were enrolled. Results: A total of 216 medical students filled in the survey outof 220 students, 126 students (n=126) were female and (n=90)were male who completed the questionnaire; the response ratewas 98.18%. Out of 216 students blood group A was 32, ABwas 42, B was 92 and O was 50. A greater variation in theresponse was observed in the physical category (St: deviation10.40), while the least variation was observed in the categoryof interpersonal (St: deviation 5.27), respondents while thevariation tends to increase in environment (St: deviation 6.78)and academic (St: deviation 7.20).Conclusion: All variables stressors like Physical, academic, environment and interpersonal are found to have negativeand insignificant relationship with dependent variable bloodgroup.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: To determine medical students' metacognitiveawareness and its impact on their academic performance.Study design: Cross-sectional analytic study. Place andDuration of Study: Two different private medical College’sfrom Lahore. From March 2016 to September 2016.Material and Methods: Study was done among second yearstudents of two private medical colleges in Lahore. Students’first year academic achievement information was collectedand they also filled the semi- structured questionnaire onmetacognition regulation by the metacognitive awarenessof reading strategies inventory (MARSI) based on threedimensions of metacognition (GLOB, SUB and PROB).Simple random sampling, a type of probability samplingwas used for this study. The data were entered in SPSS 20,Metacognitive score was taken as an independent variablewhile academic performance (first professional part 1 results)was the dependent variable. For descriptive data, mean andstandard deviation were used. For categorical data, percentageand frequencies were used. Pearson correlation coefficientswere calculated to examine the item-total score correlationResult: A total 232 students participated. The reliabilitycoefficient of MARSI was 0.88 and there was strongcorrelation among all dimensions of Metacognition score andacademic achievement with Correlation coefficient value was0.257 (p<0.01). Medical students of different colleges havealmost equal (college 1 std. deviation 109±15.3, college 2 std.deviation 110.6±17.3) Metacognition levels. Conclusion: All dimensions of metacognition are positive andstrongly correlated with each other’s. Higher the score in onedimension will cause positive change in other dimension scoreand vice versa. Overall it would be beneficial for the trainersand other mentors that to work on one dimension and it wouldalso cause positive impact on other skills and strategies.

ABSTRACT

Background: The undergraduate medical students have been reported to experience stress during their years in college and this stress has been shown to vary between clinical years and different ethnicities. As stress can lead to deterioration of performance and loss of self-esteem therefore the present study was conducted to evaluate the perceived level of stress in the first year medical students to identify psychological issues in the beginning of the year

Methods: Self administered General Health Questionnaire with 12 items [GHQ-12] was circulated after informed consent among the students present on the day of the study. The data was coded and entered in SPSS version 16. GHQ score was reported as frequencies and mean+ SD. Independent sample t-test was applied to compute relationship between gender and GHQ scores

Results: Total number of questionnaires completed was 101. The mean average GHQ- 12 score of all the students was 11.52+5.36, with a range of 01 to 28. Twelve students were found to be distressed while 7 students were experiencing psychological distress. The mean score of female students was significantly [p=0.02] higher than males

Conclusion: The first year medical students at UCMD perceive their mental health to be good. However there are some students who need special attention to perform well in their studies
